Attendance and Participation

Middle College Attendance

Middle College requires that students attend all classes. If students are chronically absent (have missed 10% of the elapsed school days, per semester),  they may be placed on a contract and possibly removed from the program.

Middle College must verify all absences. Parental and student assistance in this area will avoid the need for staff members to call home. Parents/guardians should fill out the Absence Reporting Form or call the Middle College office at (650) 574-6536 and leave a message regarding the student’s absence. Students whose parents/guardians did not call must report to a Middle College staff member upon return to school and present a note from the parent/guardian.  Absences not cleared after 72 hours are considered truancies. Each time a student is absent, parents/guardians will receive a phone call home. Check SMUHSD's attendance policy for excused absences and the SARB process.

When a student has an unexcused absence, teachers are not obligated to give make-up work. If a student has an excused absence, the student's responsible for making up assignments and missed tests. Each student is responsible for attending all classes on time. Teachers require punctual attendance and may impose penalties on students who arrive late to class.

Students who don’t comply with attendance and punctuality issues may be placed on a contract.

CSM Attendance

Regular attendance at class and laboratory sessions is an obligation of every student upon enrolling in Middle College. When absent, a student misses the course's content, continuity, and community. When absences place students in academic jeopardy, the instructor may drop them from class. In all cases, it is the instructor’s prerogative to determine when absences are excessive. A college instructor has the right to drop a student from class when such absences jeopardize the student’s opportunity to complete the class work or to benefit from the instruction.

Students must attend the first class meeting of each class they register for. If they cannot attend, they should notify the instructor in advance. Without prior notification, the instructor may drop them and admit a waiting student in their place.
